Preparing for your Simple, Studio Milestone Session in Birmingham

Babies change fast. One week they’re lifting their head, the next they’re sitting up and staring at you like they own the place. Our Simple Milestone Baby Photo Sessions in the studio are designed to freeze those fleeting stages without the stress, the long drive, or the elaborate setup.

What Is a Simple, Studio Milestone Session?

Think timeless, sweet, and totally baby-paced. Each session happens in my cozy, climate-controlled studio with soft natural-style lighting, clean backdrops, and a few timeless props. No weather worries, no crowds, no pressure. Just you, your little one, and a photographer who is very good at making babies laugh.

Most families book a session at or near each time frame below. I like to schedule sessions around big milestones like pushing up, sitting up, crawling/pulling up, and stadning/walking so we capture the differences of each stage.

  • 3 months: Smiles are arriving, and tummy time is the star of the show.
  • 6 months: Sitting up (or almost!), chubby cheeks, and big curiosity.
  • 9months: Crawling/pulling up babbling, and endless personality.
  • 12 months: Pulling up, standing and/or walking.

You can book one session or the whole collection. Seeing the milestones side by side is the real magic.

How to Prepare Before Session Day

A little planning goes a long way, and none of it is complicated.

Schedule around your baby’s best time of day. Most babies are happiest an hour or so after a nap and a feed. Pick a time slot that fits your baby’s rhythm, not yours.

Wardrobe

Choose outfits well ahead of time. Last-minute wardrobe decisions are stressful for everyone. Pick your outfits early, try them on, and have a backup ready. Simple, soft, and comfortable always wins: solid colors, gentle textures, and nothing scratchy or tight.

These tips will help you put together the perfect wardrobe.

  • Choose solids in light colors like white, off-white, tan, and light pastels
  • Dainty florals photograph well. Plaids and checks don’t. It’s best to stick with 1 pattern for 1 subject. Matching patterns work, too.
  • Pants are best for men. Think light colored khakis and light wash jeans
  • Choose clothing that fits well, is flattering on you and moves with you during your session
  • I don’t allow shoes in the studio so that’s a step you can skip. I typically don’t photograph your feet so there’s no need to worry about getting a pedicure.

Wardrobe options are available for use during your session. Check out my studio wardrobe below.

Sessions also include wardrobe shopping help. Message me if you would like to take advantage of that option or just want my opinion on your choice of wardrobe.

How to Prepare the Day of Your Session

Feed and change baby before you arrive or when you arrive if that works out better. A full tummy and a fresh diaper make for a much happier session..

Give yourself a buffer. Arriving frazzled, hairbrush in hand, is no one’s best look.

What to Bring

Pack light, but pack smart:

  • Two or three outfit options, plus a backup
  • Bottles, nursing cover, or snacks, depending on age
  • Pacifier and a favorite comfort item
  • Extra diapers and wipes
  • A change of clothes for baby (and a spare top for you, just in case!)
  • Any meaningful keepsakes, like a family blanket, a stuffed animal, or a special hat

Want to be in a few photos too? Bring an outfit for yourself that complements baby’s palette. Solids and soft tones work best.

What to Expect

A calm welcome. We’ll get you settled, offer a quick chat about your baby’s personality, and let them warm up to the space.

A baby-led pace. Sessions are short and flexible. If baby needs a snack, a nap, or a cuddle, we pause. There is no rushing and no forced poses.

Gentle, playful posing. We use safe, supported setups and plenty of silliness: peekaboo, funny noises, and the occasional dancing photographer. Genuine giggles are always the goal.

Milestone touches. Depending on the age, we might include tummy time shots, sitting portraits, a little number sign or banner, or a simple cake smash for the first birthday.

Family moments. Parents and siblings are welcome druing family sessions. We will capture all of the special bonds and full family moments, as well.

Zero pressure. Meltdowns happen. They are part of babyhood and absolutely fine. We work with the mood and capture the real moments, tears and all.

After the Session

Within 2 weeks, you’ll receive a private online gallery to view and choose your favorites. From there, you can order digital images or prints.

Ready to Capture the Little Moments?

They won’t be this small for long. Book your first milestone session today, and let’s make memories you can hold onto long after the baby giggles have turned into big-kid chatter.
