You just found out, or maybe you’ve known for a few weeks and you’re finally ready to tell people. Either way, a good announcement photo is worth planning a little.
The Birmingham Botanical Gardens are one of my favorite places to shoot photo sessions. Lush greens, flowers and plenty of space to move around make it a beautiful experience. Everything feels calm, which helps when you’re both a little nervous in front of the camera.

When to book
Book as early as possible for your choice of dates, especially if your session will occur during the Summer months, Fall or near other holidays.
When to go
Early morning or 2-3 before sunset are the best sunlight times at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The light is gorgeous filtering through the trees. Late Spring, Summer and Early Fall are the best seasonal times to go to experience the prettiest greens and florals.
What to wear
Keep it simple. Soft, solid colors like cream, sage, dusty blue, and tan photograph well against green and don’t fight the background. Skip big logos and busy patterns. If you’re announcing with a sign, a sonogram, or a pair of tiny shoes, bring it. If you’d rather skip props altogether, that works too. A quiet moment between the two of you often ends up being the favorite photo.
How it goes
I’ll guide you through natural poses based on your comfort level and preferences. We’ll get a few posed frames, a few of you walking and laughing, and the shot you’ll send to your parents.
A practical note
The gardens have their own photography guidelines, so I’ll check the current rules before your session and let you know if anything’s needed ahead of time.
If you’re thinking about an announcement session, send me a message with the date you have in mind and I’ll let you know what’s open.
