This sweet, family came to me wanting something special – pictures that captured Birmingham’s natural, Spring beauty with their tiny new addition. They hoped to blend the classic look of studio portraits with the natural warmth of outdoor photography.
We started in my Vestavia studio, with just mom and baby, for the classic newborn poses, then headed to Altadena Valley Park for the outdoor portion when the weather was just right. The park’s gentle slopes and old trees made a perfect backdrop for their family photos.

Mom wore a flowing blue dress that worked perfectly for the light and airy studio portion and blended well with the beautfiul, Spring greens and yellows of the park. Dad kept his wardrobe neutral. This is always a good idea for the men and boys so the women and girls have more options to play with color and dainty floral prints.

Altadena Valley Park has become one of my go-to spots for outdoor newborn sessions in Birmingham. Here’s why:
The park offers so many beautiful backdrops in one place:

Timing matters for outdoor newborn photography in Birmingham. I find these times work best:
Spring brings fresh greenery and wildflowers to Altadena Park. April and May offer mild temps perfect for newborns.
Summer sessions work best in early morning before the Alabama heat kicks in. The park’s shaded areas become our best friends in June and July. I don’t recommend the park in August or in temperatures above 85 degrees.
Fall creates a warm color palette with golden leaves as backdrops. September and October provide comfortable temperatures.

Golden hour (about 1-2 hours before sunset) provides that dream lighting that makes baby’s skin glow in photographs.
Early morning sessions (right after sunrise) work well in summer months to beat the heat.

The park spans 242 acres, but I have favorite spots that work perfectly for newborn photos:

The outdoor portion typically takes 45 mins-1hour. We work quickly and efficiently to keep baby comfortable and make use of the best lighting.
Totally normal! We take breaks as needed. I will provide you with a guide full of tips to help the session go more smoothly.
Soft, neutral colors work best. Think creams, soft blues and light pinks. Soft colors that work well with greens and yellows are best. My Spring guide is full of great tips.
I start watching the weather around 1 week before your session. If it seems like it may be a problem I will contact you.
