A Peek Into the Midanik Family’s In-home, Newborn Session

I’m always excited to be invited into a client’s home for newborn photos. The Midanik family wanted relaxed photos in their home – a place where they were already making memories of their baby’s first days, right where life happens.

Baby was hungry at the start, so we took time to grab a couple of tasteful, nursing photos.

While mom finished feeding baby his older brother and sister enjoyed little bed jumping…..with parents permission, of course, and some special time with dad, each other and by themselves. This is a great way to introduce a little fun into the session, get siblings comfortable and show them they’re special, too.

Why Choose In-Home Newborn Photography?

Comfort for Everyone

Having a lifestyle newborn session at home means no packing up diaper bags, extra outfits, or rushing to make it to a studio on time. Everyone stays relaxed and in their comfort zone.

Authentic Surroundings

Your home tells your story. The nursery you spent months preparing, the couch where you spend late nights feeding, and the bedroom where you all snuggle up – these spaces hold meaning that a studio simply can’t replicate.

Natural Interactions

I focus on unposed newborn photography that captures real moments. Home sessions allow for genuine family interactions in a comfortable space that tell your story.

Behind the Scenes: The Midanik Session

For the Midanik family, the entire session happened in their master bedroom. Their master bedroom had neutral colors thorughout and beautiful natural light streaming through the windows, creating the perfect setting for those sweet, light and bright newborn moments.

Mom, dad and their new little man’s brother and sister joined for a variety of photos that captured the bond everyone had formed with baby. Sessions always included individual portraits of siblings and any other pairing the family would like. I like to spend time with siblings while baby is getting needed attention.

The session flowed at baby’s pace, with breaks for feeding and changes. This relaxed approach is key to my style of newborn photography in homes.

5 Tips for Planning Your Own In-Home Newborn Session in Montgomery

  1. Pick the Rooms with Best Light and Aesthetic
  • Schedule your session when natural light is strongest in your main living spaces
  • No need to clean the whole house – focus on 2-3 key areas
  1. Dress Comfortably
  • Choose neutral, solid colors that won’t distract from your newborn
  • Choose items that aren’t stiff and lay niceley in a variety of positions
  1. Plan Around Baby’s Schedule
  • Feed baby right before I arrive if possible and whenever they’re hungry thereafter.
  • Morning sessions often work best for newborns
  1. Keep the House Warm
  • Babies like it toasty! You’ll know it’s warm enough if you can lay them down in a room in a cozy outfit and they are happy
  1. Relax and Trust the Process
  • Newborns need breaks for feeding, changing, and soothing. This is normal. I want you to take your time and do what needs to be done to keep baby happy.
  • The best photos happen when parents aren’t stressed and let things happen naturally

Common Questions About Home Newborn Sessions

How old should my baby be for newborn photos?

The best time is when your baby is 5-14 days old. They’re still sleepy and curly during this time, but I will work with babies of all ages.

How long does a home session take?

Plan for about 2-3 hours. This gives us plenty of time for feeding breaks, diaper changes, and soothing baby between setups.

What if my house isn’t “photo ready”?

Don’t worry! I can help you find the best spots with good light. We only need a few clean areas, and I can move small items as needed.

What should we wear and what’s included?

Your session includes a wardrobe guide, wardrobe assistance and dresses for mom to wear during your session. I bring a Moses basket, diaper covers, headbands and a variety of wraps and blankets for us to use during your session.

What if baby won’t sleep during the session?

That’s totally fine! Awake babies make for great alert expressions and eye contact photos. My sessions are baby-led, so we work with whatever mood they’re in.

This little man was 7 days old. At this age they will, most likely, sleep the entire session. However, you can see we had a brief period of awake time with him.
