You booked the session. You imagined a sleepy, curled-up baby in tiny wraps. Then your newborn had other plans.
This happens all the time. A baby staying awake during newborn photos is not a failure. It is just… babies being babies. We can still create beautiful newborn photos with awake babies.

There are a few things that can keep a newborn from sleeping:

Most parents walk in hoping for a perfectly sleepy newborn. Many get one. But plenty don’t, and that is completely normal.
Newborns are unpredictable. They don’t follow schedules yet. Some babies sleep through everything. Others want to see what’s going on.
An experienced newborn photographer has seen it all. They know how to slow down, wait it out, and adjust the whole plan if needed. A wide-awake baby doesn’t mean ruined photos. It just means a different approach.

A little prep goes a long way. You can’t control everything, but a few simple things can help your baby feel sleepy and settled when session time comes.
Try to feed your baby a full meal right when you arrive for your session. A full belly is one of the best ways to get a drowsy newborn. If they’re hungry before you leave your house try giving them a snack to tide them over till you arrive. Don’t stress about perfect timing, though. We definitely don’t want baby to be stressed.
Most newborn sessions happen in the morning. Babies tend to be calmer and sleepier earlier in the day.
Age matters too. The sweet spot for newborn photos is 5 to 14 days old. At this age, babies sleep deeply and curl up naturally. After two weeks, they become more alert and harder to settle into those curled poses.
If you’re still pregnant, go ahead and book now. That way you can plan your session date right in that window.

So baby decided today is not a nap day. That’s okay. A good photographer has seen this before, and they know what to do.
There are a few go-to tricks that help babies settle mid-session.
None of this is rushed. A calm, slow approach works better than trying to force sleep.
Here’s something parents don’t always know: awake photos can be just as stunning.
When baby won’t sleep, we shift gears. Some of the best shots come from sessions where baby had their eyes wide open.
Awake newborn sessions can still give you gorgeous, meaningful photos.

Sometimes baby just needs a reset. That’s built into the session.
If baby is hungry, we stop and feed. If baby is fussy, we pause and let them settle. A good photographer builds extra time into every newborn session for exactly this reason. There’s no rushing, no pressure.

A little prep goes a long way. Here’s what you can do the night before, the morning of, and during the session itself.
A warm room and outfit is key. Babies sleep best when they’re cozy.
None of this has to be perfect. Even if your baby fights sleep, there are still plenty of ways to get beautiful shots.

Both kinds of newborn photos can turn out beautiful. The difference is mostly in what poses and shots are possible.
When your baby is in a deep sleep, the photographer has a lot more to work with.
Most parents picture these kinds of photos when they think of newborn sessions. And they’re stunning.
Here’s the thing though: open-eye photos have their own kind of magic… actually, let me put it plainly. Awake photos are just as special.
You can see real examples of both in this awake and sleepy newborn photo gallery.
The truth is, most sessions include a mix of both. And a good photographer knows how to work with whatever your baby gives them that day.
What if my baby cries the whole session?
It happens. We take breaks, feed, soothe, and try again. A good session has built-in flex time for exactly this. If baby stays fussy for a long period of time I will suggest coming back a different day.
How long does a newborn photo session take?
Most sessions take around 2 hours. That extra time is there on purpose. It gives your baby room to eat, rest, and settle between poses.
Should I reschedule if my baby is fussy?
Not usually. Fussiness is normal and expected. Unless your baby is sick, it’s almost always better to keep the appointment and work through it together.
What age is best for newborn photos?
The sweet spot is 5 to 14 days old. Babies sleep more deeply at that age and are easier to pose. After two weeks, they tend to be more alert and harder to settle.
What should I do if my baby is gassy during the session?
Let me know right away. A few gentle belly rubs or a short burping break can make a big difference. There’s no need to push through when baby is uncomfortable.
A fussy or wide-awake baby is not a problem. It is just part of the process.
I have worked with all kinds of babies. Sleepy ones, wide-awake ones, and very opinionated ones who had a lot to say about the whole thing.
Every session looks a little different. Some babies drift off in minutes. Others need extra time, extra warmth, and a few more feeding breaks. That is completely fine. I build that time in on purpose.
You do not need a perfect baby to get beautiful photos. You just need a photographer who stays calm, knows what to work with, and keeps things moving at your baby’s pace. Book your newborn session today and let me take care of the rest.
