The Stokes Family’s Birmingham Botanical Gardens Outdoor Newborn Photographs in Birmingham Alabama

The Stokes family has been with me for over five years now. Their very first session was a maternity session for their oldest, who is now five years old. So when they reached out about an outdoor newborn session, I was genuinely happy. I already knew their laid-back, easy-going personalities would make the session so smooth. And their sweet new baby girl deserved a beautiful celebration.

Outdoor newborn photographs at The Birmingham Botanical Gardens in Birmingham, Alabama turned out to be the perfect fit for this family.

Why The Birmingham Botanical Gardens is Perfect for Newborn Photos

The gardens offer so much variety for outdoor newborn photography in Birmingham. It boasts soft natural light, lush greenery, and open spaces.

Here is what makes this location special for new families:

  • Natural shade from tall trees keeps harsh light off baby’s skin
  • Green backdrops give photos a soft, timeless feel
  • Paved paths and open lawns make it easy to move around with a stroller
  • Peaceful setting so baby stays calm and sleepy
  • Beautiful in every season so your photos never look dated

This spot is one of my favorite places to do outdoor newborn portraits in Birmingham Alabama.

What the Stokes Family Session Looked Like

We kept things relaxed and simple. That is really the Stokes family’s style. No rushing, no fussing. Just real moments with their new baby girl and their five-year-old big sibling.

The Light and the Setting

We shot this session at 5:30 pm which is right before the gardens closes. The soft light at the gardens during this time is just right for newborn portraits. It is warm, gentle, and really flattering for everyone in the frame.

A little fun is always important when big siblings are involved.

Sibling Moments

Having a five-year-old in the session added so much heart to the photos. Those sibling moments are always my favorite to capture. Big brother or sister holding the baby, looking at the baby, or just sitting close. Those are the ones families print and hang on the wall.

I always make time for older siblings to have moments with mom and/or dad or just for them.

Keeping Baby Comfortable

For outdoor newborn sessions it’s especially important to bring baby fed, changed, and cozy since time is limited. If baby will tolerate being unswaddled we will definitely attempt that. You can see sweet baby, Sunny decided she needed to be wrapped later on in her session.

5 Tips for Planning Your Own Birmingham Botanical Gardens Outdoor Newborn Session

Planning ahead makes a big difference. Here are five tips to help your session go well.

1. Time It Right

Newborns do best outdoors between 7 and 14 days old. They are still very sleepy and easy to settle. Plan your session within that window if you can. This sweet girl was 4 weeks old, however, and settled like a champ.

2. Pick the Right Time of Day

Early morning or evening is best. Midday sun is too harsh for the best light.

3. Think About What to Wear

Light, neutral colors tend to look best in garden settings. Soft tones like creams, whites and light pastels work best in the springl.

4. Bring the Essentials

Pack a small bag for the session. Here is a quick list:

  • Extra diapers and wipes
  • A swaddle or two that works well with your chosen wardrobe
  • Extra outfit for baby just in case
  • Pacifier if baby uses one
  • Bottle just in case

5. Keep the Schedule Loose

Newborns run the show. Feeds, diaper changes, and fussing may happen. Build in extra time so nothing feels rushed. A relaxed session gives you the best photos.
