How to Choose the Perfect Newborn Photographer: 3 key things to look for

Photography is an art form, and no two photographers are alike. That’s why choosing the right newborn photographer is so important. You want someone who can provide more than just pictures—you want an experience and memories you’ll cherish for years to come. Over time, I’ve found there are three key things I always look for when choosing a photographer. I hope these insights help you find the perfect fit for capturing your little one’s earliest moments.

1. Do you like their style?

Photography is an art form. The first question you should ask yourself is, “Do I like their style?”

Pay attention to things like:

  • background colors
  • wardrobe colors and style
  • posing techniques

If the photographer displays light and airy images, like mine, with clients wearing light colors you don’t want to hire them if bright colors are your thing.

Explore their website and social media platforms. “Does their work speak to you?’ If your answer is, “no,” or “I’m not sure,” browse other photographers work before making a commitment. If you don’t like what you see you are unlikely to love the results.

2. Pricing and Session Offerings

Pricing and session offerings are at the top of my list for important things to look for. Great things to ask yourself are:

  • Are they in my budget?
  • What offerings are important to me? Think about what’s provided.
    • Will you receive digital images or artwork?
    • What’s their editing process?
    • Is wardrobe provided?
    • What kind of preparation assistance will you receive
    • Where can the session take place?
    • Is hair and makeup included?
  • How old do they suggest the baby be during the session?

3. What do their Reviews and Testimonials say about them?

I know it seems like reviews are, often, skewed but most clients won’t leave a nice review if they truly weren’t happy. While reading reviews, try not to overanalyze how many reviews or social media comments a photographer has. Instead, read what clients have written.

Where can you read reviews?

  • Google
  • Instagram (these will come in the form of comments)
  • Facebook

Other things you may want to consider

  1. Flexibility – Does the photographer offer session date flexibility? For, example, I offer very few weekend sessions due to my, otherwise, busy schedule so I will ask clients, who book a weekend spot, if they have weekday availability in the event their chosen date doesn’t work out.
  2. What safety measures do they take to keep you and your baby healthy and safe?
  3. What is their experience?
