Baby H just turned one, and his mama wanted to make sure this moment was captured the right way. She came to my white studio looking for timeless heirloom style photos that were just as fun as they were traditional. She wanted to remember everything about her little man at this stage in his life.
Big brother came along too. And honestly, that was the best decision. He had Baby H laughing and smiling in ways I couldn’t have planned. Those sibling moments? Pure gold.

Not all birthday photos are created equal. A quick phone snapshot is sweet, but it’s not the same as a real heirloom portrait session.
Heirloom photography is about creating photos you’ll frame and keep forever. Think fine art prints, portrait wall galleries, and images that look just as good in 30 years as they do today.
For Baby H’s session we kept things simple and classic. The clean white studio backdrop let him be the star. No busy props. No clutter. Just him.

Laura Cardan’s studio setting we used for Baby Holder’s session was clean and simple. A white backdrop keeps the focus on your child. It also photographs beautifully for fine art prints. You won’t look at these photos in 10 years and cringe at a trendy backdrop choice.

We planned most of the session around Baby H. But when big brother stepped in, something shifted. Baby H lit up. The laughs were real. The smiles were easy.
If you have an older sibling who wants to join, bring them along. A few minutes together can turn into some of the best shots of the whole session.

Baby H wore classic pieces that fit the heirloom feel perfectly. If you’re not sure what to dress your little one in, keep reading. I have outfit tips below and some great vendor recommendations too.

Dressing your baby for an heirloom portrait session matters. Here are two shops I love for classic, timeless children’s clothing:
Tip: Order outfits early. Give yourself at least 2 to 3 weeks before your session date.

Planning ahead makes a big difference. Here are five things that will help your session go smoothly.
Spots fill up fast, especially around milestone ages like 12 months. Don’t wait until the week before the birthday. Book at least 4 to 6 weeks out.
Avoid trendy pieces or busy patterns. Solid colors and classic cuts photograph best. Check out Feltman Brothers or Strasburg Children for ready-to-go options.
A well-rested baby is a happy baby. Try to schedule your session during your little one’s best window of the day. Usually that’s mid-morning, but you know your baby best.
A small snack or a favorite toy can help if your baby gets fussy. We can use it to get smiles and keep the energy up.
If you have an older child, bring them in for part of the session. Like Baby Holder’s big brother, siblings often bring out the best smiles and real laughs.

How long does a 1st birthday heirloom session take?
Most sessions run about 20-30 minutes. If the entire family is involved plan for 45-60 minutes.
What should my baby wear?
Classic, simple outfits work best. Avoid logos and busy prints. Feltman Brothers and Strasburg Children are great places to start.
Can siblings be in the photos?
Siblings are welcome during full family sessions. Mini sessions include baby and 1 parent if wanted.
Where is the studio located?
Laura Cardan Photography Studio is located in Birmingham, Alabama. Visit lauracardanphoto.com to learn more.
What products can I order from my session?
You can order fine art prints, framed portraits, and wall gallery collections. These are built to last and look beautiful in your home.
Do I need to have my photos done exactly on the birthday?
No. Anytime within a few weeks of the birthday works fine. The goal is to capture this age, not the exact date.

Baby Holder’s session is a great example of what heirloom 1st birthday photography looks like when it’s done with care. Classic style, real smiles, and photos that will matter for decades.
If you want that for your little one, I would love to work with you.
