There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over a home in those first days with a new baby. The world slows down. Everything feels small and soft and impossibly precious — the curl of tiny fingers, the flutter of eyelashes, the little sighs during sleep. It only lasts a little while. A studio newborn session is simply a way to hold onto it a little longer.
If you’re expecting or have just welcomed your little one and you’re searching for an Alabama studio newborn photography session, I’d love to walk you through what a session at my Vestavia Hills natural light studio actually feels like — because I promise, it’s nothing to be nervous about.
There’s something wonderful about stepping into a space made just for this. My studio is filled with soft, natural window light — no big flashes, no stiff posing setups, just warm, glowing light spilling across the room the way it would in a cherished corner of your own home.
My style is relaxed and lifestyle in nature. Rather than tightly wrapped, sculpted poses, we lean into real, tender moments — your baby nestled in your arms, tiny fingers wrapped around yours, the natural way a newborn curls into a parent’s chest. It feels less like a photo shoot and more like simply being together, with a camera quietly capturing it.
That said, a studio still gives us wonderful control over light, temperature, and calm — three things that matter enormously when you’re working with a baby who is only a few days old. The space stays warm and cozy (newborns love that toasty temperature!), and there are less distractions that at your own home.
For families in Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook, Homewood, Hoover, and the greater Birmingham area or those that want to travel farther, a natural light studio session also means a lovely change of scenery — a beautiful, welcoming space designed with nothing but your baby’s comfort (and your memories) in mind.

Newborn sessions are slow by design. I never rush a baby, and I never rush you. Most sessions take about two unhurried hours, which sounds like a lot until you’re actually there — feeding, soothing, changing a diaper, feeding again — all at your own gentle pace.
Here’s roughly how our time together unfolds:
There is no clock-watching. If baby needs a break to eat or be soothed, we simply pause. This is your baby’s very first photo shoot, and it deserves all the gentleness in the world.
The sweet spot for newborn portraits is typically within the first two weeks of life, ideally days 5–14, when babies are naturally sleepier and curl more easily into those classic poses. That said, every baby is different, and every session is tailored to the little one in front of the camera — not the calendar. I love the 4 week age almost equally.
Because newborn schedules can’t be predicted, I always recommend booking during pregnancy, usually around your third trimester. This holds your spot and means we can move quickly once your little one arrives, without the stress of trying to find an opening on short notice.
Truly, you don’t need to bring much. Because the style is relaxed and lifestyle-focused, simple, neutral outfits for the family work beautifully — soft knits, gentle neutrals, and comfortable layers that won’t distract from your baby. I will send a styling guide beforehand so everyone feels confident and coordinated without looking matchy-matchy. Wardrobe is available in my client closet, as well.
If you have something sentimental — a family heirloom blanket, a handmade hat from grandma — bring it along and we’ll build part of the session around it.
Beyond that, just bring your baby, a diaper bag, and yourselves. Feeding, fussing, and diaper changes are simply part of a newborn session, and there’s a private, comfortable space in the studio for all of it.
If you’re pregnant and reading this while making your hospital bag list, or if you’re bleary-eyed at 3 a.m. with a brand-new baby on your chest, hear this: you don’t have to have it all figured out. You don’t need a Pinterest board of poses or a perfectly curated wardrobe. You just need to show up, and I’ll take care of the rest — the light, the wraps, the props, the pacing, all of it.
These photos aren’t really about perfection. They’re about this moment — the one that only happens once — captured softly, so you can return to it again and again as your baby grows.
I’d be honored to be part of your family’s story. If you’re expecting or have a new little one at home in Vestavia Hills or anywhere in the Birmingham area, I’d love to chat about holding a spot for your studio newborn session.

How long does a studio newborn session take? Most sessions run around 2 hours to allow plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and settling baby between shots — no rushing, ever.
What is the best age for newborn photos? I prefer the 7-14 day range or around 4 weeks. Read more below.
Do I need special outfits? That’s up to you. I provide a wardrobe for moms and young children you can borrow or I can help you shop for wardrobe.
What does “lifestyle” newborn photography mean? Instead of tightly bundled up, posed portraits, a lifestyle session captures real, natural moments between your baby and family — snuggling, feeding, quiet embraces — all in soft, natural light.
Can siblings and parents be included in the session? Absolutely. I wouldn’t want it any other way.
When should I book my newborn session? The best time to book is during pregnancy, typically in your third trimester, to reserve your spot before baby arrives. If you’re due near a big holiday or in the summer, reach out earlier.
