Railroad Park Family Photo Session in Birmingham, AL: How to Make It Actually Fun

Most families tell me the same thing before their session: “Our kids hate pictures.” Then ten minutes in, somebody’s being chased across the grass, somebody else is giggling so hard they can’t stand up, and I’m getting my favorite shots of the day.

That’s what a family session should feel like, and Railroad Park in downtown Birmingham is one of my favorite places to do it.

Why Railroad Park works for family photos

It has room to move. Kids can run, parents can walk with them, and nobody has to stand still in a stiff line. You also get a lot of variety in one stop: open green space, water, paths, and the Birmingham skyline in the background. It’s a good fit for families who want photos that look like Birmingham without driving across town.

Where we’ll shoot in the park

My favorite spot to shoot in Railroad Park is in the back of the park in the grassy area. The light is beautiful and we can use the paths and rocks for a slightly different look.

Best time of day

I love the last 1.5 hour of the day at Railroad Park. This is when the light is prettiest at my preferred spots.

Weekdays tend to be quieter and less busy than weekends. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons, but winter sessions are underrated: fewer crowds and a soft, clean light.

What to wear

Keep it simple and pick one color family. Soft blues, creams, sage, and tans all photograph well against the park’s greens and the sky. Skip big logos and loud patterns, since they compete with your faces. Wear shoes your kids can actually run in. Comfort shows up in photos more than any outfit does.

How we keep it fun

I don’t say “say cheese.” Instead, we play. A few things I might ask you to try:

  • Race each other to a tree.
  • Give a piggyback ride, or spin the toddler.
  • Whisper a secret in someone’s ear.
  • Tickle first, ask questions later.
  • Walk toward me holding hands and see who cracks up first.

The posed family photo takes about two minutes. The rest of the time is just your family being itself, and that’s the part you’ll want on your wall.

What to expect

Plan on about an hour. We’ll meet at a spot I’ll send you ahead of time, start with a few simple family photos while everyone’s fresh, and then move into the playful stuff. If the kids need a snack or a break, we take one. [Gallery delivery time, e.g., “You’ll have your gallery in about two weeks.”]

Good to know before you go

  • Address: 1600 First Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35233.
  • Respect the space. The park asks that photography not interfere with other visitors’ quiet enjoyment, so I keep sessions relaxed and out of the way.
  • Stay off the tracks. The park sits beside active rail lines, and we always stay on the park side, never on or near the tracks.
