Newborn Photos with Dogs

Safety First: Preparing for Your Dog and Baby Photoshoot

Getting ready for photos with your newborn and dog takes some careful planning. Your furry friend and tiny baby can make beautiful pictures together, but safety must be your top concern.

Before the session:

  • Have your dog well-groomed and clean
  • Take your dog for a long walk to burn extra energy
  • Keep treats handy for good behavior rewards
  • Make sure nails are trimmed to prevent scratches
  • Have a helper available during the session whose only job is to watch and handle the dog
This shot was made possible by placing a tiny bit of peanut butter on baby’s head. Mom was standing right beside dog for safety.

Best Timing for Newborn and Dog Photography

Timing is key when planning photos with your newborn and furry friend. I suggest booking your session when your baby is 5-12 days old. During this window, babies are still sleepy and curl up in those adorable poses we all love. If you have an active dog a sleepy baby will, also, make things much easier.

Your session will likely last 2 hours, giving plenty of time for feeding breaks, diaper changes, and helping your dog settle. This extended timeframe allows everyone to relax without rushing.

Setting Up the Perfect Shot

Finding the right spot for photos with your baby and dog makes all the difference. The best location is often your home where your dog already feels comfortable. If you have a well trained and socialized dog a studio session (like the one featured) could work for you.

Studio Sessions

Hypoallergenic dogs are included in your session fee. All other dogs require a $50 cleaning fee. Please, also, keep in mind studio sessions with dogs are best done with dogs who follow commands.

Props That Work Well

Simple props help tell your story without taking focus away from your baby and dog:

  • a bed
  • Baby in mom or dad’s hands with doggie close by
  • Baby in crib with doggie looking at them
  • A Moses basket where baby can safely lie near your dog

Pose Ideas for Dogs and Newborns

Getting great photos of your newborn with your dog takes a bit of planning, but the results are worth it. Here are some safe and adorable pose ideas to try:

Safety-First Poses

  1. The Watchful Guardian
  • Position dog sitting or lying next to the baby’s bassinet
  1. Parent-Held Poses
  • Mom or dad holds baby while sitting next to the dog
  • Dog sits at your feet while you cradle the baby

Safety Tip: Always have a “spotter” ready to step in if your dog shows any signs of stress or excitement.

ng away, or stiff body language. Sometimes a 5-minute timeout is all they need to reset.

FAQ: Newborn Photography with Dogs

Let me answer the most common questions parents ask about mixing puppies and babies in photos.

Is it safe to photograph my newborn with our dog?

Yes, it can be safe when done right. Before I try any poses I will ask what you are comfortable with based on your dog’s interactions with baby.

Plan for a helper to watch the dog, during the session. Never leave your baby alone with the dog during the shoot.

What if my dog doesn’t cooperate during the session?

Dogs have days when they just aren’t in the mood. We can:

  1. Take breaks when needed
  2. Use treats for good behavior
  3. Get some photos without the dog, then try again
  4. Follow your dog’s lead – sometimes the unplanned shots turn out best!

How long do these sessions typically take?

The full newborn session runs around 2 hours but we’ll only include your dog for a small portion (15-30 minutes max). This keeps stress low for both your baby and pet.

Can we include older children and dogs in the same photo?

Absolutely! Older siblings can help with the dog in photos, which creates natural, loving images. I’ll guide everyone into positions that look good and keep everyone safe.

Pro Tip: Bring your dog’s favorite treats and toys to the session. These familiar items can help keep them calm and focused when needed.
