6 month, baby photo session – 5 Must Have Images

Meet Baby Lowen: An Adorable Sitter Session Star

Little Lowen recently visited my Birmingham studio for her baby photographs, and what a joy she was to capture!

Mom wanted to document Lowen as she reached the sitter stage, which typically happens between 6 and 8 months. Like many parents, she adores all those precious details – from tiny hands and feet to long eyelashes and that adorable chunky baby look that doesn’t last forever.

Sitter sessions are such a special milestone to capture. At this age, babies show off their budding personalities while still having all that baby sweetness we can’t get enough of. Why the Sitter Session Is a Must-Have Milestone for Your Baby’s First Year explains why this particular age is pure magic for photos!

5 Must Have Images for Your 6 Month, Baby Photo Session

By 6 months babies have gained quite a few skills from their tiny, newborn stage. And, as you know, they grow and change way too quickly. Thus, you don’t have long to capture all these memories you’ll want to have to look back on.

1. Belly Poses

6 month old babies are pro’s at tummy time and are able to hold their heads up long enough to get some great shots. They do get tired quickly so this pose isn’t one you can keep them in for long.

2. On their back holding their feet or simply with feet in the air

This is probably my favorite solo image to capture for the sitter session. I love watching them hold their feet or just wiggle them in the air and grin up at you. If you’re lucky you’ll get a little tongue sticking out like Lowen gave us. Adding a basket gives us variety.

Tip: The younger babies may not be playing with their feet as well as the ones closer to 7 or 8 months. If that’s an important shot you may want to push your session back a month or so. Little Lowen had just turned 6 months and wasn’t interested in holding her feet long enough for a shot.

3. On Their Back Looking Up at You

I find this to be the easiest shot for the 6 month, baby photosession. They don’t have a choice but to look up at you. I like to make silly noises or have a parent hold a noise maker near my head so they’ll look in my direction.

This is a great time to capture detail shots of their feet and legs. I don’t know about you but those chunky thighs would be hanging in my living room for me to adore every time I walked by. Virtual squeezes are allowed.

4. Sitting, of course!

The sitting poses are the main reason parents book these sessions. It’s an exciting skill!

4 options for variety

  • Face baby sitting with feet pointing straight at the camera
  • Turn baby’s legs to one side or the other
  • Turn baby almost all the way around so they’ll have to tun to look at you
  • Add a basket and do all the poses again

You’ll see we put baby in a diaper cover only for some shots. I want to see those rolls and you’ll want to remember them.

5. With a Parent

I beg of you please don’t skip these. Your baby will come alive with you in ways they never would sitting by themselves.

Common Questions About Studio Baby Photos in Birmingham

What age is best for the sitter session?

The sitter stage normally happens between 6 and 8 months. I am very flexible with these when scheduled on weekday mornings. If sitting doesn’t happen by the time your session rolls around we will simply reschedule for a later date.

How long do baby photo sessions take?

You can expect to be at the studio for 45 minutes – 1 hour. Actual shooting time is 20-30 minutes. This gives you time to change baby and let them acclimate to the surroundings or take breaks if needed.

What should we bring to our baby’s photo session?

Pack a diaper bag with the basics, 2-3 outfit options, comfort items, and any special props or heirlooms you want included in the photos.

Can family members be in some photos too?

Yes! Family shots are a beautiful addition to baby’s studio session. Simple, coordinating outfits in neutral colors work best.

How soon will we see our photos?

Your preview gallery will be available within 2 weeks. If it’s not peak season I like to aim for 1 week. You will, then, choose your favorites and I will edit your selections for final delivery within 2 weeks of your selection date.
